'Compared to other people in my current school, I think I'm more confident and comfortable with who I am and I don't pretend to be someone else. That's what I got from the Lewes New School'

Maths

The teaching of maths takes place sometimes in relation to the projects that are on going in the classes and sometimes through discreet projects that do not directly connect with other curriculum areas. Through this, children experience that maths is both a subject in its own right with interesting non-practical applications, as well as a subject that gives us tools for understanding and solving everyday problems.

Using the National Numeracy Strategy framework as a guideline, children learn a broad range of maths skills. Children take part in some kind of maths work every day with activities ranging from the memorising of useful mathematical facts (eg times tables) to extended problem solving and mathematical investigation. Children are given opportunities to learn and develop mental as well as written strategies for their mathematical thinking.
